The Winners: New Media Women Entrepreneur Awards
Three entrepreneurial news ideas including franchises for community news sites, a food policy and strategies start-up, and a health Web site for women ages 18 to 27 each won a $10,000 award to launch their projects. They were selected from a whopping 435 proposals received in the second year of the McCormick New Media Women Entrepreneurs initiative. The number of proposals increased 129 percent from last year's total of 190.

"There was an incredibly competitive field of creative ideas to address specific issues proposed by women who have a great deal of optimism about the future of news and information," said J-Lab's Jan Schaffer.

New J-Lab Report: New Media Makers Get Grants for News
At least 180 community, family and other foundations have contributed nearly $128 million in grants to news and information initiatives in the United States since 2005. The information is contained in a grants database that is part of a new J-Lab report: "New Media Makers: A Toolkit for Innovators in Community Media and Grant Making." The toolkit also offers case studies and videos that capture lessons from these new media makers and their funders.
